In photon
correlation spectroscopy (PCS) or quasi-elastic
light scattering (QELS) the Brownian motion (movement in random direction)
of sub-micron particles is measured as a function of time. A laser beam is diffracted
by particles in suspension. The diffusion of particles causes rapid fluctuations
in scattering intensity around a mean value at a certain angle (varying from
10 to 90°). These intensity fluctuations depend on particle
size. The calculated correlation function results in a diffusion coefficient
for a given temperature and viscosity which can be converted to particle
size.

The
photon correlation spectoscopy technique is used for
determination of average particle
size in a range between 3 and 3000 nm. The measurements are performed on
a Coulter N4 or an ALV 5000. The report consists of a table with average and
mode effective hydrodynamic diameter and polydispersity index, which is a measure
for the width of the distribution.

photon
correlation spectroscopy is a static light
scattering technique for submicron particle size analysis in low concentration
or in colloid suspension by multi angle analysis.
The analysis of submicron particle size samples in low concentration. In photon
correlation spectroscopy the Brownian
motion of particles is measured with a multi angle laser giving the diffusion
coefficient thus the particle size of the dispersion.
The diffusion coefficient of the submicron particles in a powder in dispersion.
The nano particle characterization is done with a laser multi angle analysis
resulting in the Brownian
motion . In this manner colloid systems are characterized with quasi elastic
light scattering
spectroscopy.
An effective means for detecting operational mistakes or erroneous applications
and for assuring consistent, reproducible results is to retain a quantity of
one or more appropriate materials with known, well-characterized properties
which can be used to test instrument performance. The reference materials subsequently
listed by primary property are offered by Micromeritics for this corroborative
purpose. Each has been carefully selected to be representative of the parameter,
or parameters, for which it is recommended, to be non-hazardous, and to have
an extended shelf life.
The lot of material from which each reference portion was extracted has been
repeatedly analyzed. This has been done on a number of instruments, by different
operators, and, in some cases, even using different techniques. We do not claim
our reference materials to be standards. The extensive, blind testing utilizing
independent laboratories which would enable us to make such a statement has
not been undertaken. We are confident, nevertheless, and so assert, that an
instrument giving the result, or results, within the limits specified with each
reference material is operating satisfactorily.
